Program Overview and Referral Process

This statewide men’s health program is a comprehensive and innovative program to support men and their families to improve the quality of life and health outcomes in our communities. It is designed to strengthen and support the health care frontline of health centers and hospitals.

Objectives:

  • Lower the no show rates to doctor’s appointments and health visits for men
  • Increase capacity and patient utilization of health care facilities
  • Reduce the number of cases of Cardiovascular Diseases and Cancer Disparities and health and social inequities (Heart attack, cancer deaths, housing and unemployment, violence and crime
  • Provide Men’s Health Education and support for men and their families
  • Increase public safety and reduce recidivism

Target Population:  Men, men of Color, High risk for CVD, Prostate and Colon Cancer, high disparities and inequities
Demographic Area: Greater Boston Area, Neighboring Boston Towns, Brockton, Lawrence, Lowell, Springfield and Worcester

Program Components:

  • 12 week men’s health education and support program which covers topics from CVD, Prostate & Colon cancer, mental Health, substance abuse domestic violence, financial literacy, education, re-entry, parenting and fatherhood and spiritual counsel (Group Size 15 to 20 men)
  • Massachusetts Men’s Health Coalition; a men’s health movement towards unity, violence free communities and support for women and children in their lives. (Men’s Outreach)
  • Men’s Health Educators, Ambassadors, and Faithful Fathers a leadership group with Spiritual values
  • IRRP: a re-entry Program that uses innovative techniques to reduce recidivism to prison and improve public safety

Referral Process:

Referrals can come from all agencies but the key is making sure that the men are linked to the CEHSID’s Men’s Health Programs. This is making sure that access to health care, support services, health education and other resources flow smoothly

Outcomes:

  • Improve Access to health care for men and their families
  • Increase Men’s enrollment in health Insurance coverage, linkage to PCP and Site
  • Reduce recidivism by 30% over 2 years
  • Increase the number of men of color (High risk) employed and has housing
  • Community Transformation: Safer communities, healthier men and healthier communities

CEHSID Inc. Men’s Health has several locations in the community to accommodate health education seminars. CEHSID Inc. collaborates with State health agencies, law enforcement agencies and organizations to improve public health and safety. CEHSID Inc. believes that Churches, Community Centers, Community Health Centers are very important to the success of high quality health care delivery to people in our communities and the elimination of health and social inequities and disparities.

BARBERS AND HAIR CARE PROFESSIONALS FOR HEALTH

Barbers and Hair care experts and professionals are very important people of influence in our communities. Each day thousands of people across our country utilize the services of Barbers and hair care experts. Individuals confide in them and in some occasions trust their judgement when making an important decision about appearance, job search, lifestyle and more importantly their health.

The Center for the Elimination of Health and Social inequities and Disparities Inc. (CEHSID Inc.) has developed a model to provide free health education by collaborating with hundreds of Barbershops, hair care specialist and experts across the state of Massachusetts to combat health disparities among high risk populations. We focus on building a long term relationship with each hair care establishment. So far this initiative which utilizes the national barbershop model has been able to educate thousands of men, women and children on chronic diseases. We have free workshops available to the public at barbershops, hair care expert establishments, community Health Centers, community Centers, Churches and at various work places.

Diseases and issues focused on: Cardiovascular diseases (Heart attack and Stroke), Diabetes, Hypertension, High Cholesterol, Obesity, Breast, Lung and Prostate Cancer, Fatherhood, Motherhood and Parenting, Mental Health, Behavioral Health, substance abuse, STDs, Violence prevention and Anger Management, Youth Mentorship, Reentry, Fitness and wellness, Nutrition, Financial Literacy and Spiritual Health.

Prostate Cancer Mini Symposium

 

Cehsid is reaching men of color, minorities, Latinos and men at high risk for prostate cancer at this community base event. It is very important that we launch this community initiative to educate men on Prostate cancer and the challenges and successes of dealing with the cancer disparities among populations at risk. We invite as many men to attend and to spread the word about this event on Thursday July 26th, 2018 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at 175 Ruggles Street, Roxbury MA. (ST Katherine Drexel Function Hall near the Ruggles MBTA train Station and Northeastern University.
